Columban Summer Social Thursday 26th May

 Col Summer Social 2016_5

Many thanks to all those who attended the Columban Summer Social at the Hare & Hounds pub in St Albans on Thursday 26th May. We had a great turnout and it was lovely to see Old Columbans, parents and staff mingling and enjoying the evening.

Columban Ramblers Sunday 22nd May

Ashridge Ramble May 2016

On Sunday 22nd May, the Columban Ramblers, led by Old Columbans Giles Harrison and Andy Mower, enjoyed lovely weather as they walked about six miles over the scenic downs around Ashridge .  The bluebells were slightly over but the wonderful white and aromatic wild garlic in the woods near Ivinghoe Beacon more than made up for it. This is one of the Columban Ramblers favourite rambles and they had a group of 14 , which included Old Columban, Brian O’Loghlen, who joined them with his wife and friends for the first time.
The ramblers started off at the Bridgewater Monument, then headed into the woods and proceeded into the open areas around Ivinghoe Beacon, with wonderful views over towards Whipsnade and the white lion on the hill, and walked northwards towards Pitstone and the windmill . The group then walked  down to Aldbury where the Greyhound pub proved once again to be a welcoming watering hole!

The next ramble will be on 3rd July around the Ayots and will be led by Old Columbans Ken Brennan and Jim Watret . All are welcome!

Columban Golf Day Friday 22nd April

CGolf_Group_Apr16

We had a full complement of players for the Columban Golf Day on Friday 22nd April at Harpenden Common Golf Club.  It was a closely fought competition amongst current and former parents and Old Columbans.   The individual trophy was won by Kevin Mauldridge, and the team award was won by; Mick O'Connor, Rob Stoddart, David Jones and Dermot O'Brien. We are looking forward to the next Columban Golf day in November.

Columban Ramblers Sunday 17th April

Ramblers_Bedm_April16

On Sunday 17th April, the Columban Ramblers had a lovely walk of about six miles around Leverstock Green, Bedmond and Pimlico led by local lad and Old Columban Jim Watret. The bluebells and cowslips were out in abundance and the countryside was filled with colour. The area was very scenic, which is somewhat surprising as it is quite close to the motorways and  not  a typical walking area for the Columban Ramblers. The ramblers started out from Bunkers Park, which is an extensive open area, good for dog walkers and childrens' playing, proceeded to Pimlico and then around the huge radio mast at Bedmond and back around Abbot’s Hill School at Nash Mills. A circuit well worth taking more regularly during the different seasons. After the ramble, some of the walkers retired for a refreshing drink and lunch to The Leather Bottle pub in Leverstock Green.

Old Columbans Basketball Tournament Saturday 16th April

OCs Basketball April 2016

Our thanks to the Old Columbans who turned up for the annual OCs Basketball Tournament in the gym at SCC on Saturday 16th April. A good time was had by all and the games were followed by refreshments in the King Harry pub.

Old Columbans Annual Dinner Saturday 19th March

OCs Dinner 2016

The Old Columbans had another great night at their annual dinner at SCC on Saturday 19th March. OCs from the classes of 1986, 1996, 2006 as well as the SCC boxing fraternity and members of the OCs “Several 20s” club, aka the 60+ OCs, enjoyed their reunions at the dinner.

OC70 David Nash, former National Boxing Champion 50 years ago to the day, paid a wonderful tribute to the late Rev. George Saintsbury, boxing coach at SCC. Guests greatly enjoyed watching a DVD showing footage of boxing at the school in the 1960’s, which had been originally recorded on Cine film by Rev Saintsbury.
