 Old Columbans Sports

Welcome to our Old Columbans sports and outdoor events page.  Many of our older members will remember Old Columbans sports from years ago which included a thriving cricket club and a number of basketball sides playing in local leagues.  Whilst these clubs slowly disappeared, we now have a number of Old Columbans showing a great  interest in reviving these old traditions.  So as well as our annual Old Boys sporting events, we are beginning to spread our wings, particularly in rugby.  We would be very interested in hearing from anyone who might like to get involved in any sport and especially those who would like to take a leading role.

Old Columbans Rugby

Old Columbans RFC

Old Columbans RFC is a now an affiliated member of the Herts RFU, primarily a team made up of players from the St. Columbas College alumni network.
Our goal is to encourage and stimulate the growth of a fully fledged 15-a-side Old Columbans rugby club. The team is made up predominantly of players who have a strong connection with the school, whether as ex pupils or ex teachers, however we have an open invitation for any Columban affiliates to get involved in anyway they can.
For more information about the club or the training please contact Nick Kelliher C07 at: or alternatively visit for more news, updates, and information on becoming a fully-fledged playing or affiliate member.  Also, please check out the  Old Columbans RFC Facebook page

OCs Golf Society  in Grafton Morrish Finals Competition, 25th- 27th September 2015

Grafton Morrish_Sep15

The Old Columbans Golf Society  (OCGS) played in the Grafton Morrish golf competition finals, 25th -27th September in Norfolk.  Unfortunately the OCs lost to Woodbridge 3-0 in the first round of the scratch foursomes matchplay on Friday morning, but Woodenbridge had much lower handicaps and were previous semi-finalists. The OCs also played in the Solihull Salver Plate scratch foursomes Stableford competition on Saturday with Brighton and Sherborne, and got 71 points in total, finishing in the bottom quartile but better than seven other teams!

The pairings were Nick Smith / Ben Armstrong, Peter Yates / Paul Nash and Stuart Masson / Dan Masson. There were 48 teams playing in the competition and just over 300 players competed in the first two rounds!

Old Columbans Basketball

Our thanks to the Old Columbans who turned up at SCC on Saturday 16th April to play in the OCs annual basketball tournament in the gym. A good time was had by all and the tournament was followed by  refreshments in the King Harry pub.

 Columban Ramblers

Columban Ramblers Sunday 22nd May 2016

Ashridge Ramble May 2016

On Sunday 22nd May, the Columban Ramblers, led by Old Columbans Giles Harrison and Andy Mower, enjoyed lovely weather as they walked about six miles over the scenic downs around Ashridge .  The bluebells were slightly over but the wonderful white and aromatic wild garlic in the woods near Ivinghoe Beacon more than made up for it. This is one of the Columban Ramblers favourite rambles and they had a group of 14 , which included Old Columban, Brian O’Loghlen, who joined them with his wife and friends for the first time.

The ramblers started off at the Bridgewater Monument, then headed into the woods and proceeded into the open areas around Ivinghoe Beacon, with wonderful views over towards Whipsnade and the white lion on the hill, and walked northwards towards Pitstone and the windmill . The group then walked  down to Aldbury where the Greyhound pub proved once again to be a welcoming watering hole!

Upcoming Ramble:

Ayots, Sunday 3rd July, 11am

This ramble will be led by Old Columbans Ken Brennan and Jim Watret . All members of the Columban community are invited to join the Columban Ramblers. All family members and dogs welcome. Walks begin at 11am and are circular and approximately 7/8 miles in length with refreshments at the end.
